A 35-year-old man died on Monday after he was involved in a crash while trying to pull onto the shoulder of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
Jessie McCalip, a resident of St. George, was driving his 2020 Hyundai Elantra when he was rear-ended by a Dodge Charger around 8:45 p.m.
McCalip, a husband and father of two, had come to a stop in the right eastbound lane of the expressway while trying to pull into the far-right lane close to the Queens Blvd. exit in Rego Park.
Officials said the Charger was going from the center lane to the right lane when it hit McCalip’s vehicle.
The impact sent the Elantra sliding along a concrete wall. It then spun around and ended up in the right lane.
First responders found McCalip unconscious and trapped inside the crashed vehicle with severe trauma about the body.
He was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital Center, but he subsequently died.
The 20-year-old man who was driving the Dodge did not suffer any injuries and he stayed at the scene. Police did not file any charges right away and will continue to investigate.
McCalip’s wife Detonia McCalip said he was on his way to work at Elmhurst Animal Emergency Hospital in Queens when the crash occurred. He was a veterinary tech.
He was set to earn a college degree within three months and then start a new career fixing airplanes.
His wife said he worked full time, attended school, and was always in good spirits
